POWER. CULTURE. MOTION.
JCAL’s Making Moves Dance Festival has presented dance commissions and works-in-progress by multiethnic Queens choreographers and dance companies for 15 years. As a program committed to new work, we platform modern, contemporary, ballet, ballroom, folk, hip hop, jazz, and social-dance influence (like house and waacking), and African, Afro-Latin, East Asian, Middle Eastern, Afro-Caribbean, East Indian genres, and more.
Making Moves spotlights established choreographers, emerging artists, and mid-career artists, all selected by paid peer jury via open call. JCAL invites a past commissioned artist to return to the festival every year.
Making Moves runs a full weekend every September. Tickets are $10 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and $5 on Sundays at 3pm. JCAL offers blocks of free seats at every performance for seniors (62+) and students who live or work in a 114 zip code. Simply show your ID and a piece of mail with your current address and your ticket is free.
Making Moves is generously supported by The Mertz Gilmore Foundation and the Harkness Foundation for Dance.
JCAL gratefully acknowledges public support from NY City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (Speaker’s Initiative), NY City Council Member Nantasha Williams, and the Council’s Cultural Immigrant Initiative.
JCAL gratefully acknowledges operating support from the Mellon Foundation, Howard Gilman Foundation, Matisse Foundation, Altman Foundation, and MacMillan Foundation.
