Time to give a shout-out to something JCAL has never done before—presented our own film festival! Conceived by Interim Artistic Director Courtney Ffrench, JCAL’s 10-Minute Film Festival will stream on JCAL’s YouTube on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17 (times TBD, see below).
Inspired by the festival’s theme—“2020”—JCAL received dozens of entries from NYC -based filmmakers of color, and a jury has now selected 10 of the best of these films, all running 10 minutes or less. And…there will be prizes! So watch this space, and stay in touch.

JCAL's new music series, Riddim Section, continues tomorrow! RSVP below for an explosive performance by the Reggae band "Steppaz". The innovative band was established in 2013 to fill a void in the New York entertainment scene. This band offers a diverse and versatile approach to music with their ability to perform Reggae, Jazz, Soul, Pop and everything in between.

On March 31st, 2021 at 7pm, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning will present the second installment of JCAL Talks, a speaker series spotlighting Queens-based thought leaders in arts and culture, education and politics, and civic and community life. Our featured guest will Rhonda Binda, Deputy Queens Borough President and former executive director of the Jamaica Center BID. Presented as a 60-minute live-stream to JCAL’s YouTube and Facebook platforms, Ms. Binda will be in conversation with JCAL Interim Executive Director Leonard Jacobs, followed by a curated Q&A.

This month's 2nd Thursday Night Jazz has been rescheduled to April 1st, 7pm. RSVP below to watch Amirtha Kidambi's duo in action.
Amirtha Kidambi is invested in the creation and performance of subversive music, from free improvisation and avant-jazz, to experimental bands and new music. María Grand is a saxophonist, composer, educator, and vocalist.
In this duo, they explore the timbral and expressive combinations of their voices and saxophones through collaborative compositions.

Immanuel Wilkins Trio

The New York Times names his album "Omega" the #1 Jazz Album in 2020, and the Jazz Times voted him the Best New Jazz Artist. On April 8th, you can watch Immanuel Wilkins live in the finale of 2nd Thursday Night Jazz for FREE.
By studying the humanity and the cultural specificity of jazz, Wilkins aspires to bring people together through his art. His debut recording, Omega was released by Blue Note Records in 2020 and has received uniformly rave reviews.
Riddim Section Presents: Tony Adè

RSVP for free below to watch Afrobeats artist Tony Adè! Tony Adè self-taught his skills on the west African talking drum which gave birth to him being the first artist to introduce the talking drum into mainstream pop music during his performance with Janet Jackson live on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon for Janet’s single “Made For Now” featuring Daddy Yankee in 2018.
Tony Adè was also the first music director in the United States to orchestrate an official live band entity to perform with some of the top Afrobeats artists and facilitate the live band for one of the biggest global Afrobeats concert series, One Africa Music Fest.

10 Minute Film Festival

The line up of films is set and RSVPs are open for JCAL's 10 Minute Film Festival. On April 16th and April 17th, JCAL will screen the short films of 10 NYC based filmmakers. Tune in to watch community based films and vote on which filmmaker should win the cash prize!

JCAL invites NYC-based dance companies and choreographers to apply via open call for the 12th Annual Making Moves Dance Festival 2021 ~ TO LIFE! (MMDF2021). Submission deadline is April 17th, 2021; early submission is encouraged.
MMDF2021 offers paid performance opportunities for 9 choreographers on the outdoor stage of the Jamaica Performing Arts Center on Friday, Sept.17th, 2021 and Saturday, Sept.18th, 2021.
Choreographers working in all dance genres are encouraged to apply.
