To help you and your families stay active and creative, we streamed #jcalPOPUPclasses online every week from April to June. These programs were geared towards school-aged audiences but were made with all age groups in mind.

About the Classes
DANCE with Janora Blackman
During this online class, students begin with a 5 minute warm-up which will lead into a 20 minute choreography session. Students will learn fresh hip hop routines each session from JCAL's own Janora Blackman and will have the opportunity to showcase some of their favorite moves at the end of each class. Not only will students learn different routines, they will get an exhilarating workout at the same time.
ART with Anthony Carter
Learn to create art at home using everyday materials. We will explore the possibilities of painting and sculpture using clean, safe recycled materials along with art-specific materials like paint. We will learn to paint the face, figure and animals. We will develop paintings from our imagination and from our inspiration.
Anthony Carter is an art teacher, muralist, painter, ceramicist and sculptor.
YOGA with with Kecia Chin
Kecia Chin specializes in teaching people the efficient and effective use of the body to prevent and reverse degenerative posture and movement habits that cause chronic, painful conditions. Her formula for success is Movement + Strength + Optimal Balance + Endurance + Fun = Peak Performance!
DRAMA with Caroline Gombe
All the world's a stage, even your home during quarantine, with these weekly sessions. Using Meyerhold's biomechanics as a foundation, young actors will learn techniques to keep them fit, sharp, and creative.
Caroline Gombé is a NY actress, dancer and singer with credits in theatre, film and TV. She holds an MA in acting performing techniques, she is a certified acting teacher in NY State and an experienced and resourceful teaching artist.
SONGWRITING with Chris Ignacio
Chris Ignacio is a Filipino American performer, producer and educator. He has toured nationally and abroad since graduating from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. He is a Culture Push Fellow for Utopian Practice, and Queens Council on the Arts Community Engagement Commissioning grantee for his self-produced project Co-written, which involves collaborative songwriting with young people of color.
MUSIC with Karina Parker
This music series will incorporate all aspects of general music learning from note reading and rhythmic studies, to music history and music appreciation. Each lesson incorporates the fundamentals of the most recognized pedagogical methods such as Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Kodaly Method, Suzuki Method, and Orff Method. While no instrument is required, these classes will offer a foundation of music which develop knowledge and understanding that can be transferred to any instrument.
DRAMA with Gareth Tidball
Gareth Tidball is a Welsh-American actress, teaching artist and dialect coach. A drama graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Gareth has performed off-Broadway and internationally. She is thrilled to return to JCAL as a drama teacher and reconnect with the community's creative student population.
WELLNESS with Kyarra Vilfort
This series is about sharing various wellness and nutrition information to promote good overall health.
Kyarra Vilfort has been a nutritionist for two years and a dance instructor for over ten. She has her Bachelor's Degree in Health and Nutrition Science from Brooklyn College. Kyarra love to teach and make people feel good inside and out.
