Exhibition Open Call

Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) invites artists and curators to submit proposals for exhibitions in the Jamaica Arts Center galleries. In line with JCAL’s mission to encourage participation in the arts, this open call aims to expand opportunities for artists, to support the exploration of new ideas and to foster meaningful dialogue. Facing the ongoing pandemic and calls for social reform, and further being mindful of our institution’s long history of pioneering, diverse, inclusive visual arts work as JCAL approaches its 50th anniversary in 2022, we are organizing our programs with the ideas of “community first” and “digital first.” Guided by these principles, this open call is meant to initiate new collaborations for innovative, socially engaged and locally relevant visual arts exhibitions and public programming.

Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed twice a year, spring and fall. Group shows and curatorial projects are preferred, though solo exhibitions will also be considered. Queens and Southeast Queens-based creatives, community organizations and members of underrepresented communities are encouraged to apply.

Proposals will be selected by a rotating panel of artists, art professionals, Southeast Queens community members, and JCAL staff. The number of exhibitions selected in each round will vary based on space availability and will be on view for approximately six to eight weeks.
