Thursday Night Jazz Presents: Thana Alexa

June 11, 2020

This season of Thursday Night Jazz has been unique to say the least. While nothing beats a performance at our landmark locations, we shifted our programs over to Youtube where musicians have performed from home. Like true artists, they have adjusted and delivered great shows nonetheless. As our season comes to an end, we present the acclaimed Jazz vocalist, composer, and arranger Thana Alexa.

Fresh off the success of her latest album ONA ("SHE" in Croatian), Thana will bring her boundary pushing style to JCAL tonight. Her music has deep-seated roots in jazz and overtones of contemporary soul and world music. Along with her individual success, she is well known for her collaborations with her husband, five-time Grammy® winner Antonio Sanchez (composer for the Oscar winning Birdman film and drummer with Pat Metheny for 20 years). With his band Migration they have recorded three critically acclaimed albums.

Subscribe to our Youtube as we cap off our Thursday Night Jazz season with this great performance!

Thana had this to say about tonight's show:

1. How would you describe your style and approach as an artist?

While my style is rooted in jazz, my music showcases a sonic pallet inspired by contemporary soul, world music and pop. I use my voice as both a lyrical and experimental instrument and incorporate atmospheric sounds, electronics, soundscapes and textures with my looping and effects pedals.

2. What do you hope people take away from your performance?

My hope is that my solo performance will connect me to the audience of listeners to make us feel like we’re not in any of this alone… The last few weeks of events coupled with the last couple months of quarantine have presented us with a very trying time, but it has also been an inspirational time. Speaking out, expressing and using art as a way to connect is paramount. I hope that this performance will allow the audience to feel whatever it is that they feel in the moment and to embrace that experience.
