Year-Long Saturday Art Classes

Every Saturday, students of all ages converge at JCAL to attend its diverse arts classes. Our School of the Arts help students pursue creative expression, passionate learning and artistic development. We offer more than 40 different classes for children, teens, adults & seniors to choose from.

 

Our teaching artists provide exposure to a wide variety of art forms including theater, dance, ceramics, keyboard, cartoon animation and so much more.

Dance

Creative Movement

Release all that energy, excitement, and jitters through Creative Movement. Students will put their energy to use as they begin to learn techniques based in ballet, modern dance, and yoga. The class will lead them through exercises that focus on their coordination, spatial awareness, and improvisation abilities. Come tap into your creative impulse while creating a foundation for dance, drama, and performing arts.

Intro to Ballet

Students are taught the basic ballet positions and movements. It is a fun introduction to the beauty and grace of ballet.

Intermediate Ballet

This class is designed for the student who wants to refine their technique at an intermediate level. The students will build on their knowledge of positions, correct body alignment, and ballet terminology. This class not only teaches technique, but also encourages students to develop their creative processes. PLEASE NOTE: To enroll in this class requires prerequisite completion. Into to Hip Hop

This class introduces the fast-paced, high-energy dance style of hip-hop. After a short warm-up, class will focus on learning aerobic dance combinations done to pop and hip-hop music.

Intermediate Hip Hop

Intermediate Hip Hop focuses on building advanced level concepts and techniques; including increased  strength, flexibility, and musicality to build a foundation for performance. The class is structured around various dance techniques including ballet, modern, jazz and African. PLEASE NOTE: To enroll in this class requires prerequisite completion. Intro to Modern Dance

Dancers challenge their body and mind as they learn the diverse styles of traditional Modern dance in a fun and engaging atmosphere that will encourage them to move expressively.

Tap Dance

Tap into that energy with this fun, upbeat class following in the footsteps of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Fred Astaire. Tap Dance teaches self-control, flexibility, and movement skills as they learn the basics of dance. Movements and steps focus on Tap Dance but will lay the groundwork for dance, including Ballet, Modern, Hip-Hop, Latin, and many others.

Adults Hip Hop

Dancing is not just for kids and this class is the perfect opportunity for adults to have fun with Hip Hop. 

Adults Flamenco Dance

Fly into your passions with Spanish Dance! Flamenco and Spanish Dance basics will be explored in this fun and upbeat class. Clicking castanets, percussive footwork, strong upper body carriage are the focus. Flamenco improves balance, coordination, harnesses energy  and focuses the mind and body towards individual and collective creativity.

Kids Flamenco Dance

Yoga

Ease into your yoga journey by learning sequences of beginner-level postures, asana-proper alignment, breathing, and modification for varying abilities. Each class will include gentle hip openers, forward bends, twists, and standing, seated, and balance postures. Students will develop strength, flexibility, steadiness and confidence through the study of energizing vinyasa and safe alignment.

Acting Out

Our Pre-School classes turn the spotlight away from the teachers as the children take the stage.  Be part of the action while students develop rhythmic coordination, language and storytelling skills through games, song, and dance. Students will explore the joys of improv, singing, movement, and voice & speech, transforming their stories into tales to share and tell. These classes are designed to be a child's first real introduction to performing and are equally perfect for those who are already singing and dancing all over the house as well as those who feel shy to get up in front of other people.

Intro to Acting

This class is designed to inspire a young person's naturally creative self as they go through the foundations of acting technique. Students will engage in theater games and improvisation as a basis for exploration. The class teaches ensemble building skills to establish a safe environment for the students to play and explore.

Intermediate Acting

This is a fun but challenging class that covers acting techniques applied to monologues and scene work. These skills will tap into the student's imagination, self-awareness, concentration, and self-esteem while also strengthening the student's ability to communicate and collaborate creatively with fellow actors.  PLEASE NOTE: To enroll in this class requires prerequisite completion. Broadway at JCAL

If you're looking for an all-encompassing performing arts course, look no further. Broadway at JCAL incorporates Drama, Music, Vocals, Movement, and Dance. Students will learn the basics of musical theatre and Broadway dances, as well as how to break down lyrics, dialogues, and find the story of a song. The class culminates in an open performance for family and friends to view the actors in action.

Visual Arts

Intro to Studio Art

Learn fundamental elements of drawing and painting with pen and ink, watercolor, book arts, painted- paper collage, printmaking, and acrylic and tempera painting. Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal style while building their art-making vocabulary and strengthening their fine motor and problem solving skills.

Cartooning Animation

Bring your doodles, sketches, and characters to life in Cartooning Animation. This exciting class presents the basic principles of animation through the creation of an animated video. Participants utilize stop motion techniques to animate ordinary objects, people, and photographs, as well as create original characters made from their drawings and cut paper. Each student will have the opportunity to write, direct, and incorporate sound into their own video animation production.

Adults Studio Art

Artists at all levels are welcome to attend our adult art studio course. This course is an open studio format. Students choose their own subject matter and media, as they learn from our skilled teaching artist and from each other. The instructor will work with students to further their skills and techniques as well as give group demonstrations and lectures.

Mural Painting

In this advanced class students will learn about the design and implementation of large-scale indoor and outdoor murals. The course culminated with the creation of a permanent mural in JCAL. 

Intro to Ceramics

If you can imagine it, you can create it in JCAL's ceramics studio. Ceramics is an introductory course designed to give students a hands-on educational and artistic experience using the medium of clay. Students will begin with basic hand-building techniques and ways of shaping clay-including coil, pinch, and slab methods. As students progress they will have the opportunity to move to wheel throwing.  Students will also gain experience with various decorating, glazing, and firing techniques.

Adults Ceramics

Adult Ceramics is an intermediate to advanced course, designed to give students a hands-on educational and artistic experience using the medium of clay. Students will work to improve their hand building and sculptural skills. Advanced students will learn the basics of wheel throwing. Students will also gain experience with various decorating, glazing, and firing techniques.

Global Arts & Crafts

This exciting class will explore the international world of craft making. Students ages 6 to adults will be taught how to make craft items from around the world using traditional techniques that have been passed down like stories for generations.

Mixed Sculpture

Explore different methods of modeling and assembling three-dimensional sculptures in this rigorous studio art class.

Intro to Sewing

Learn the basics of sewing and even complete several pieces in this fun, fabulous practical arts class.

Hand Sewing

Take your sewing skills to the next level with the course designed to provide an enjoyable introduction to the artistry of hand-sewing

Fashion IIlustration

Whether it's high fashion, everyday wear, or something altogether interstellar, this class will help you take the fabulous outfits from your imagination and put them on the page, ready to become a wearable reality.

Comic Book Creation

Kids have a great time in this class which will have them creating their own original action heroes, manga, anime, or humorous human or animal cartoon characters in no time. Students will learn how to create stories and concepts that will have them utilize their characters along with settings, backgrounds, props, narration and dialog in single panel cartoons and comic strips. Each student will produce a comic book to take with them at the end of the course.

Intermediate Studio Art

Students learn about the advanced elements of art while exploring a wide range of media and techniques including landscape drafting and charcoal portraiture. PLEASE NOTE: To enroll in this class requires prerequisite completion. To acquire an authorization code, please email pscorese@jcal.org.

Intro to 3D printing

Explore the exciting possibilities of taking your digital designs and transforming them into three-dimensional figures by learning how to use the cutting edge technology of 3D printing. 

Intro to Video Game Design

Want to make a video game? In this course, students learn the start-to-finish process of creating a 2D video game (Super Mario, Angry Birds, etc.). It is an introduction to programming through the creation of original work and the modification of existing games.

Intermediate Game Design

Create video games like the pros, as you develop more advanced worlds, characters, and gameplay in this intermediate course. PLEASE NOTE: To enroll in this class requires prerequisite completion. To acquire an authorization code, please email pscorese@jcal.org.

MUSIC

Voice for Kids

In this entry level course Students will learn to find their voice in this fun and supportive group class environment. Students will learn the basics of sound production while gaining confidence and a love of singing as performers. The class will consist of vocal warm-ups, breath control techniques, and singing songs in both group and solo situations. Song genres vary from Pop to Rock, Soul, and Musical Theater etc.

Voice for Tweens

Young singers will further their knowledge of singing and performance by adding new songs to their repertoire. The class environment is fun and energetic, reinforcing the fundamentals learned in Voice I. This class is perfect for the young singer who has some experience performing and/or singing. Students will gain confidence in a performance setting through group and solo exercises as well as experience live performance atmospheres.

Intro to Guitar

Get your hands on a guitar and learn how to play. Intro to Guitar is a fun and exciting opportunity for students to learn the basics. Students will learn the fundamentals for playing the guitar with an emphasis on developing chord knowledge to familiar songs. Class will cover tuning, tab, riffs, first position chords and basic strums. Students will also gain a background into music and its cultural impacts throughout the world.

Adults Guitar

Students will build on their knowledge of chord progressions and rhythms in rock, indie, alternative, classic, pop, and traditional songs. Students will take on improvisation, basic repertoire, barre chords, more challenging intros and solos, as well as gain a background into music and its cultural impacts throughout the world. Classes are limited to 10 students. Electric guitars welcome; bring an amp.

Intro to Keyboard

This course lays the foundation for long-term success, emphasizing proper posture and hand/finger position, and coordination between students' eyes, hands, and feet. By approaching music as a unique "foreign language," JCAL keyboarding students will learn how to "translate" the printed music, exploring the relationships between rhythm, melody, and harmony. Students will practice and perform as a group, in duos, and as soloists.

Intermediate Keyboard

Students continue to master technical skills such as position, note reading, and rhythmic accuracy as they expand their understanding of musical concepts in this intermediate level course. Adults Keyboard

Explore the "universal language of music" continuing technical mastery of the keyboard. This class expands students' understanding of musical concepts including dynamics and tempo markings, melodic and harmonic intervals and inversions, and the relationship between music, other performing arts, and the liberal arts and sciences. The students will begin learning to create their own music and improvisational skills.

TUITION POLICY

All tuition must be collected by 2nd week of classes. Payment plan should be instituted if full payment can’t be met. Notification to withdraw from classes must be received in writing by 2nd week in order to receive refund, which will be prorated. Only credit will be issued if request is received after 2nd week of the classes. No exceptions. There are no additional refunds or credits for missed classes.
