School of the Arts
School of the Arts Summer 2021 session features several 6-week courses suitable for all ages, in disciplines ranging from ceramics to piano, cartooning and painting. Most classes will be held on-site at JCAL (161-04 Jamaica Avenue); all are led by one of the institution’s acclaimed professional teaching artists.
On Tuesday, July 13, JCAL will celebrate the reopening of School of the Arts with an Open House from 12 noon to 6pm, with JCAL staff and teaching artists in attendance and available to answer questions. Classes officially kick off on Saturday, July 17.

For nearly 50 years, JCAL has welcomed students of all ages to its diverse lineup of classes and workshops. School of the Arts has traditionally served as an accessible, affordable way to pursue creative expression, passionate learning and artistic development. With COVID-19, JCAL shifted to online education, creating its JCAL Education at Home series and pop-up classes. The reopening of School of the Arts signals a major milestone in JCAL’s post-pandemic recovery, and a recommitment to the community it serves.
JCAL School of the Arts Summer 2021 Classes:
Ceramics with Sana Musasama
Ceramics, with Sana Musasama: If you can imagine it, you can create it in JCAL’s ceramics studio. Ceramics 1 is an introductory course designed to give students a hands-on educational and artistic experience using the medium of clay. Students will begin with basic hand-building techniques and ways of shaping clay-including coil, pinch and slab methods. Students will also gain experience with various decorating, glazing, and firing techniques. Open to students of all ages, $120.
Cartooning with Alex Shapiro
Students create their own original action heroes, manga, anime or humorous human or animal cartoon characters in no time at all. Students learn how to create stories and concepts that utilize their characters along with settings, backgrounds, props, narration and dialogue in single-panel cartoons and comic strips. Each student will produce a comic book to take with them at the end of the course. Recommended for kids, teens and adults, $120.
Art with Anthony Carter
Learn fundamental elements of drawing and painting with pen and ink, watercolor, painted-paper collage, printmaking, and acrylic and tempera painting. Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal style while building their art-making vocabulary and strengthening their fine motor and problem-solving skills. Recommended for kids and teens, $120.
Music with Karina Parker
Learn Piano or singing techniques with a professional teaching artist! "Music with Karina Parker" features several options for students including a piano class for beginner and intermediate piano students. Each student will practice rhythmic fluency, note reading, and piano technique, all while preparing an individual piano piece to practice and perform at the end of the class.
Prefer a singing class instead? Sign up for "Voice with Karina Parker" . This class covers all of the basics of singing technique, including knowing how to sing healthily, learning how to use your full range, and an introduction to reading music, all while exploring different musical genres
Piano with Karina Parker also offers a virtual class, "JCAL One on One", in which students can learn keyboard from the comfort of their homes.
Guitar with Julia Keefe
A fun and exciting opportunity for students to learn the basics of the Guitar. Students will learn the fundamentals for playing the guitar with an emphasis on developing chord knowledge to familiar songs. Class will cover tuning, tab, riffs, first position chords and basic strums. Students will also gain a background into music and its cultural impacts throughout the world.
