Making Moves Dance Festival 2021 ~

Deadline: April 17th, 2021

JCAL invites NYC-based dance companies and choreographers to apply via open call for the 12th Annual Making Moves Dance Festival 2021 ~ TO LIFE! (MMDF2021). Submission deadline is April 17th, 2021; early submission is encouraged. MMDF2021 offers paid performance opportunities for 9 choreographers on the outdoor stage of the Jamaica Performing Arts Center on Friday, Sept.17th, 2021 and Saturday, Sept.18th, 2021. Choreographers working in all dance genres are encouraged to apply.

Amirtha Kidambi

March 11th 2021 7pm

Amirtha Kidambi is invested in the creation and performance of subversive music, from free improvisation and avant-jazz, to experimental bands and new music. María Grand is a saxophonist, composer, educator, and vocalist.

In this duo, they explore the timbral and expressive combinations of their voices and saxophones through collaborative compositions.

A Celebration of Spring

March 1st - March 21st

We're excited to present "A Celebration of Spring", the second installment of JCAL School Assembly/Family Matinee Series.

Storyteller Monica Peterson aims to delight listeners with magical tales of seasonal festivities and inspiring stories of national holidays and heroes. In addition, she weaves true accounts of women whose determination and courage altered history.

Process->Project: What Comes Out of Our Sketchbooks.

March 18th, 2021 6pm

Not all artists work or think alike. Participating artists from Process > Project will talk about their creative process and sketchbook practice. Join this livestreamed event on JCAL's Youtube Channel to see pre-recorded segments from the artists and participate in a live Q&A with the curators, Rejin Leys and Damali Abrams.

"Process->Project: What Comes Out of Our Sketchbooks" is on view online and at JCAL's Miller Gallery until March 20th.

JCAL Reading and Discussion

Starting March 9th, 2021

In this Literary Series, participants enjoy conversation on politics and the current state of civic thought, feeling, and participation as they read excerpts from such classic authors as Ralph Ellison, Danielle Allen and Benjamin Kunkel.

Four biweekly sessions will be led by Daniel Carlton, an Actor, Director, Poet, Playwright, Storyteller, Teacher and

Facilitator. This program is made possible

Next up on JCAL's new music series is Reggae Artist Joel Edwards and "Steppaz". Steppaz was established in 2013 to fill a void in the New York Entertainment Scene. This band offers a diverse and versatile approach to music with their ability to perform Reggae, Jazz, Souls, Pop and everything between.


10 Minute Film Festival

The dates are set and RSVPs are officially open for JCAL's 10 Minute Film Festival. A three-member jury will select films that will be streamed on JCAL's YouTube channel, awarding prizes totaling in over $1000. RSVP for the free event below, or submit your film here.

The Jadin Wong Fellowship for Dance and Van Lier Fellowship for Music are open for applications.

Both are for early or mid-career Asian American artists based in New York, aged 30 or younger.
