Meet tonight's performer Bria Monét

At JCAL, we pride ourselves on providing accessible education programs to encourage participation in the arts. For this reason, it's extra rewarding when someone like Bria Monét, who began her formal music education as a child learning keyboard at JCAL, makes a return as a full fledged performer. Bria is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who is set to perform tonight as a part of Friday Nights @ JAC, sponsored by Councilman I. Daneek Miller. Meet Bria Monét below!

1. How would you describe your style and approach as an artist?

Feel what you're feeling; do so absolutely and without shame. Now that we're here, how will we respond? Do we recognize our impact, and respect our connection to each other? Seeing the power in our own vulnerability helps us find the courage to be compassionate. If we can practice compassion for ourselves, surely we can do it for others. This is my approach to music. I write through what I'm feeling, challenging my understanding of the experience, in turn opening my heart to the surrounding world of possibilities.

Singing with my guitar, building loops from scratch, arranging live and improvising over my creations is the performance style that allows me the most freedom and surrender to the messages of faith and love I share.

2. What do you hope people take away from your performance?

Acknowledgement of our experience can be a freeing, and powerful release in itself. Not allowing ourselves to be defeated by the trials of yesterday and fears of tomorrow, strengthens our inner purpose.

I believe if we can illuminate that purpose, the brighter it glows and the more often it appears in the world we see around us. Music plays a major meditative role in my life; allowing me to tap into something inside myself that is greater than myself. While songwriting is an exploration of self, it's also a challenge in honesty. From this honest space, a peace and a joy follow afterward that I hope to convey to my listeners. The choice is ours to love, let love, forgive and persist.
