Meet JCAL'S Anthony Carter

Coming from an art focused background, it was only a matter of time before Anthony Carter picked up a paintbrush himself. His portfolio features a diverse array of mediums, ranging from ceramics, to photography and graffiti. Anthony is a valuable resource at JCAL, where he currently holds an online art class, Wednesday's at 4 PM. Ahead of his weekly class, he answered a few questions for us.

1. How did you get into your art? What were some of your earliest influences?

My parents and siblings are all art teachers and artists so they are my earliest influence artistically other than studying my favorite comics and cartoons. But then came graffiti/street art and that affected me deeply. But I find inspiration everywhere.

2. What are some things that make you unique/define you as an artist?

I believe that my portfolio, knowledge, skill set, personal and professional experiences as an artist make me unique. My dedication to my work is lifelong and I love teaching others the knowledge I've gained through the years.

3. What advice would you have for a young creative looking to take a similar path?

My advice for young artists is this: "Press On" Everyday I see a work of calligraphy on my wall that tells me: "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

4. What do you hope to accomplish through your art going forward?

I would like to start a mural/visual arts program that works with students of all ages along with businesses and community organizations to develop meaningful and original works of public art. I would like to develop a visual arts community center for young kids to hang out and be productive and creative together and have art shows and events. I would like to travel and paint murals and explore. These are my art goals. The most practical and essential goal for me is to make a LIVING off of teaching and artwork. Thats my dream!
