My art is in many ways is an analogy and a celebration of the complex beauty of black women. Because of unfair stereotypes, gender and racial biases, young women like myself could easily be discouraged. For young women, this could cause some insecurities and stifle our growth. These issues make it hard for young black women to orient ourselves upright in a world that consistently barrages us with warped images of our humanity. Part of breaking out of this cycle of trying to conform to society’s views of young black women is illustrating the diversity of our experience.
